Background of the Study

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder characterized by the production of abnormal hemoglobin, leading to chronic anemia, pain episodes, and various complications. In Nigeria, SCD is a major public health concern, with a significant number of affected individuals residing in Adamawa State. Effective management of SCD, particularly among children, is crucial for reducing morbidity and improving quality of life.

Nurse-led interventions have been identified as effective strategies in managing chronic diseases, including SCD. These interventions encompass patient education, pain management, routine monitoring, and psychosocial support, all aimed at empowering patients and their families to manage the condition effectively.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the high prevalence of SCD in Adamawa State, there is limited information on the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in managing the disease among children. Challenges such as inadequate healthcare infrastructure, limited access to specialized care, and insufficient training for nurses impede the delivery of comprehensive SCD management. Assessing the impact of nurse-led interventions is essential to identify best practices and areas needing improvement to enhance patient outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in the management of SCD among children in Adamawa State.

2. To identify the specific components of nurse-led interventions that contribute to improved health outcomes in pediatric SCD patients.

3. To determine the challenges faced by nurses in implementing these interventions and propose solutions to address them.

Research Questions

1. How effective are nurse-led interventions in managing SCD among children in Adamawa State?

2. Which components of these interventions are most beneficial in improving patient outcomes?

3. What challenges do nurses encounter in delivering these interventions, and how can they be mitigated?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led interventions significantly improve the management and outcomes of SCD among children in Adamawa State.

2. Specific components, such as patient education and pain management, are particularly effective in enhancing patient well-being.

3. Addressing implementation challenges will further enhance the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in SCD management.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on healthcare facilities in Adamawa State where nurse-led interventions for SCD management are implemented. Data will be collected through patient health records, interviews with nurses, and patient surveys. Limitations may include variability in intervention implementation across facilities and potential recall bias in patient self-reports.

Definitions of Terms
